The World’s Smallest Web Server…

Not many people keep a web server on top of their water cooler but that’s exactly where Stephanie Maksylewich keeps hers!

The web server is actually a modified Instant Messenger device called a “ZipIt“. The device is marketed to teens but is actually a fairly capable little device which runs embedded Linux.

You can read more on Stephanie’s ZipIt Web Server site (naturally hosted on her modified ZipIt).

Facebook Ads May Violate New York Law…

The New York Times has reported that Facebook’s latest plan may violate New York privacy law.

Facebook plans to associate advertisements with the names and pictures of users who like those particular products.

The New York law states that a lawsuit for damages may be brought by any person whose name, portrait, picture or voice is used for advertising purposes without written consent. Such actions could be a criminal misdemeanor.

But the law could also be applied by users outside of the state of New York if their information was associated with an ad that was shown anywhere in the state of New York.

Facebook have been quick to comment that the new social ads platform will let the users link to a product themselves and thus provide consent.

Another advertising system was recently introduced by Facebook which allows marketers target specific interest groups.

An End To Google PageRank?

There are rumors floating around that PageRank is to be scrapped by Google.

Many people are making good money out of PageRank and many more focus their site’s marketing campaigns around PageRank. This rumor has a lot of people worried.

But when you look at the SERPs does PageRank really count? The answer it seems is no. Often low PR sites favor better than high PR sites in search results. But that hasn’t stopped an entire community of link sellers and directory owners basing their operations around PageRank.

After every big PR update the forums are filled with chatter about winners and losers along with offers of high PR links and high PR sites for sale to the highest bidder. Certainly PageRank is being abused and this needs to be dealt with.

I just heard that Google is actually planning to actually drop the public PageRank button from the Google Toolbar. This is certainly a move in the right direction.

Please people no P&J sandwiches. Remember that I’m from England so only English Muffins and cups of Earl Grey tea with milk will do. ;)

Check Your Site’s PageRank (and a whole lot more)…

There are numerous places you can go to check your websites PageRank these days but I just found a great new site where you can check a whole lot of other things about your site.

The site is called SmartPageRank.com and checks if the PageRank is fake or not. It also checks the PageRank from multiple data centers and with and without the www.

It reminds me a lot of DNScoop.com but has some features such as checking DMOZ status and providing a thumbnail of the site you are checking which I really like.

Check it out and let me know what you think!
