How Much Is Mozilla & Firefox Actually Worth?

firefox-title

How much is Firefox worth, will it go public and when? The answers are a lot, almost definitely and probably this year or next.

Mozilla’s open source browser, Firefox has done what most people would have considered impossible in the past few years. It has managed to eat away at Microsoft’s domination of the browser market. When you think of the major advantages Microsoft has had in that it’s browser comes pre-installed on just about every new PC, this is even more of an achievement.

Firefox currently has more than a 15% share of the browser market. That equals approximately 100 million or more downloads. So just how much is Firefox worth?

According to the New York Times in May 2007, Firefox has generated more than $100 million in revenue over the past few years. It generated $6 million in 2004 and $52 million in 2005. If revenue continues to grow we could be looking at $100 million to $200 million per year. And that’s before it has really started trying to build a business.

Mozilla hasn’t made much effort yet to actually build a business. Their main revenue stream is derived from per browser carriage revenue for the little Google search box you see in the top right corner of your toolbar. This is equates to approximately $1 a download according to some estimates, so there is clearly a lot more money to be made.

Even if you allow $50 million a year for costs that still would leave Mozilla with annual profit of $50 million to $150 million.

So when will Mozilla/Firefox go public? Mozilla’s Mitchell Baker says “never!”. But why would the Mozilla Foundation not want several billion dollars worth of public company stock?

Let’s face it… an IPO is inevitable.

And here’s a thought… what if Mozilla bought Netscape from Time Warner and renamed the company Netscape Firefox! ;)

Firefox 3 Enters Beta…

But No Deadline Set For Final Release…

Mozilla has released Firefox 3 Alpha 5. This version is intended for both developers and beta testers but not end users.

Codenamed “Gran Paradiso” after the highest mountain group in the Graian Alps, Firefox 3 is
being built on top of the next generation of Mozilla’s layout engine, Gecko 1.9.

For end users, Firefox 2 remains the current version. A second beta is planned for December 2007 and at least three total beta releases are planned. The public release for Firefox 3 is not expected until early 2008.

If you wish to test the beta it is available at Mozilla’s Website.

The Facebook Phenomenon…

Started in a Harvard University dorm room less than four years ago, Facebook spread like wildfire among college students. Last year, it opened membership to the world, and the wildfire is still raging. Facebook now has more than 54 million users, second among social networking sites behind only Beverly Hills-based MySpace. And it’s sucking up Web traffic and Silicon Valley engineering talent.

Is Google OS here already? Not quite but watch this space…

An alternative OS for the masses…

A new operating system based around the Ubuntu distribution of Linux is causing quite a stir.

gOS is being advertised as: “An alternative OS with Google Apps and other Web 2.0 apps for the masses.” on the Official gOS website.

Instead of the usual GNOME or KDE desktops however, gOS uses the Enlightenment Window Manager. This means lower speed and memory requirements to run the OS. It is one of the fastest desktop environments I’ve seen in recent years.

Wal-Mart has been offering gOS on a $200 system with some very good reviews…

“I am a student who needed a computer for word processing and email. I wanted to obtain the cheapest possible, high quality computer. I looked at a number of companies like Dell, HP, GateWay etc. They all had $350+ computers but they ran vista, and promised to be (since they were so cheap) very slow.

This ‘green gpc’ was purchased on a whim, when I saw it in a WalMart in Columbus OH. After setting up, I have been greeted to a nonstop computing fest. I had never imagined a computer could be so easy to use! I was used to my Windows XP computer at work, so I had held high hopes for this ‘Linux’ computer.

You have to see, use, and experience this computer. It is worth 10x the price in terms of ease-of-use, speed, security, and pleasantness. It’s so intuitive, quiet, inexpensive, efficient, etc. It is the best possible deal for a person looking to use a computer for anything except 3D games.”

Wal-Mart introduced the Everex Green gPC TC2502 on November 1, 2007. Their online warehouse sold out of the machine in just less than two weeks.

Google has close ties to Ubuntu. Google has supported Ubuntu through the Ubucon conferences and in many other ways. Founder of the Ubuntu foundation, Mark Shuttleworth, has confirmed that Google contributes patches to Ubuntu.

Some Google employees use a modified version of Ubuntu, which is known as Goobuntu. However, Google have denied any plans to release Goobuntu publicly.

Speculation continues however that Google may soon be entering the operating system business.

Facebook Ads May Violate New York Law…

The New York Times has reported that Facebook’s latest plan may violate New York privacy law.

Facebook plans to associate advertisements with the names and pictures of users who like those particular products.

The New York law states that a lawsuit for damages may be brought by any person whose name, portrait, picture or voice is used for advertising purposes without written consent. Such actions could be a criminal misdemeanor.

But the law could also be applied by users outside of the state of New York if their information was associated with an ad that was shown anywhere in the state of New York.

Facebook have been quick to comment that the new social ads platform will let the users link to a product themselves and thus provide consent.

Another advertising system was recently introduced by Facebook which allows marketers target specific interest groups.

An End To Google PageRank?

There are rumors floating around that PageRank is to be scrapped by Google.

Many people are making good money out of PageRank and many more focus their site’s marketing campaigns around PageRank. This rumor has a lot of people worried.

But when you look at the SERPs does PageRank really count? The answer it seems is no. Often low PR sites favor better than high PR sites in search results. But that hasn’t stopped an entire community of link sellers and directory owners basing their operations around PageRank.

After every big PR update the forums are filled with chatter about winners and losers along with offers of high PR links and high PR sites for sale to the highest bidder. Certainly PageRank is being abused and this needs to be dealt with.

I just heard that Google is actually planning to actually drop the public PageRank button from the Google Toolbar. This is certainly a move in the right direction.
