Time To Get Dedicated Hosting… Ditch That Shared Server!

There are a lot of people using shared web hosting. When you use shared hosting you share a web server with many other websites. Each user has their own section which keeps their files private from all the other users.

Shared hosting is often the cheapest option. This is the reason most people choose it. However, there are a number of reasons why a dedicated hosting service is important if you are serious about developing a successful website.

Dedicated web hosting is where the user leases an entire web server. It is not shared with any other users and this gives the user total control of the server. The user can make all the decisions about what hardware or operating system to use.

Dedicated Server

So how do you know if you need a dedicated web server?

Does your site currently use or plan to use a lot of bandwidth?

Dedicated server bandwidth is often considerably higher than with shared hosting. If you are getting a lot of traffic it can end up costing you a fortune with a shared server if you go over your allocated bandwidth.

Is your current site losing customers and potential sales because of poor server performance?

The problem with shared hosting packages is that every site on the server is competing for resources. If there are a number of sites hosted on the server with large amounts of traffic performance on your site may suffer, especially during peak hours. If your customer is waiting for more than 8 seconds for the page to load, chances are you’ve already lost his business.

Is your current website changing? Does your shared hosting package have everything your new site needs?

Often when users decide to replace their existing site with a new one it becomes clear that the existing hosting package doesn’t meet the necessary requirements to run the new site, software package or script. It can be difficult to get a shared server upgraded to meet these requirements. With a dedicated server such upgrades are generally much easier because the server is completely under your control.

Is your website located in a bad neighourhood?

The problem with a lot of shared hosting is that you rarely know who you are sharing the server with. Do you know any of the other websites on your shared server? Because all the websites on a shared server have the same IP address it is possible for your site to become associated with bad websites that share the server and their bad reputation can affect your business!

Do you have enough storage capacity?

If your site is storing a lot of data a dedicated hosting service can provide more disk space and bandwidth than a shared hosting account. Share servers have to balance resources between many users and websites. With a dedicated server the resources are all yours!

Do you need a managed server?

Many shared hosting services are unmanaged. This can cause problems, especially if there are server problems. Can your business afford website downtime? If it’s not managed then it’s up to you to report a problem. How long before you notice your site isn’t loading? 1 hour? 2 hours? 8 hours? Server downtime = damaged reputation = less sales. A managed, dedicated server is the best option.

How is your shared hosting company customer service?

Customer service is probably one of the most important factors you should consider after server uptime. If you have a question or a problem you want the best advice and friendly, helpful staff to assist you. But guess what? Customer service with shared hosting packages is frequently poor. You get what you pay for and dedicated hosting is no exception. Dedicated server = dedicated customer support.

Do you need more than one domain?

Sometimes shared hosting companies only allow one domain name or charge extra for multiple domains. A dedicated hosting account will allow you to host unlimited domains.

If you’re thinking about switching from shared hosting to a dedicated server there really are a lot of good packages out there. If you need reliability, unlimited resources, excellent customer support and everything else that comes with a shared server, isn’t it time you switched?

Wi-Fi Detector Shirt At ThinkGeek.com…

My fave store for all things slightly geeky, ThinkGeek.com is selling a Wi-Fi detecting shirt…

Here at ThinkGeek we’re pretty lazy when it comes to technology. We expect our gadgets to do all the busywork while we focus on the high level important tasks like reading blogs. That’s why we hate to have to crack open our laptops just to see if there is any wi-fi internet access about… and keychain wi-fi detectors, we would have to actually remove them from our pockets to look at them. But now thanks to the ingenious ThinkGeek robot monkeys you can display the current wi-fi signal strength to yourself and everyone around you with this stylish Wi-Fi Detector Shirt. The glowing bars on the front of the shirt dynamically change as the surrounding wi-fi signal strength fluctuates. Finally you can get the attention you deserve as others bow to you as their reverential wi-fi god, while geeky chicks swoon at your presence. You can thank us later.

They also have many other uber-cool items. Check them out for cool gift ideas or just for something extra special for yourself. ;)

Netscape Is Dead… Long Live Firefox…

The Internet browser, which first introduced me to the Internet in 1994 is no more. As of February 1st 2008, AOL has ceased development of the Netscape web browser and is no longer providing support.

netscape2-splash

AOL’s director of the Netscape brand, Tom Drapeau has recommended that users of Netscape based browsers switch to Mozilla Firefox. Indeed, the last few releases of Netscape have been based around the popular open-source Firefox browser.

Drapeau writes…

“Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reigns fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.”

Netscape Navigator faced heavy competition from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer during the browser wars of the later 90s. The fact that Microsoft’s browser shipped with every new Windows PC meant that Netscape’s market share was significantly damaged. This was central to the anti-trust case against Microsoft.

Later acquired by AOL, most people agree that much of the original Netscape died with AOL’s purchase. There have been a number of developments in the browser market in recent years. Mozilla mutated into the Firefox of today and new contenders like Safari and Opera appeared on the scene.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Netscape’s small development team. Official support ended February 1st but the Netscape community forum is still active. The Netscape web portal lives on, for now at least.

Anyone feeling nostalgic can always install the Netscape themes and add ons available for Firefox. Just search for Netscape and you’ll find plenty! ;)

Fanpop - The Next Generation Of Fansite…

It’s tough to keep up with the world wide web when it keeps getting bigger and bigger each day. Wouldn’t it be great if someone organized the web into topics you care about?

Four guys in San Francisco thought so too and created Fanpop!

fanpop

Fanpop.com is a one-stop destination for real people with real passions to find real content and community.

Remember when the web was small enough that you could look at a directory of the best sites on the web for a certain area of interest? We miss those days. :(
Fanpop is the next generation of fansite created for the fans by the fans. It’s a one-stop destination for fans of anything and everything and the place to find fellow devoted fans.

Fanpop makes discovering and sharing content fun, easy and social.

Fanpop is essentially a network of user-generated fansites for different topics of interest created and maintained by the community of fans. There fandoms are called a “spot” because it’s a place where you can hang out and get to know other fans.

Every spot has a bunch of really cool features that empower the fans to share and discover content and interact with each other.

In all spots you can find the following features:

  • Videos - kinda like youtube
  • Links - social bookmarking
  • Picks - choose between A and B type polls

Get Inside Digg With Digg Labs…

I think everyone reading this will know exactly what Digg is right? A very popular site combining social bookmarking, blogging and syndication. Unless you’ve been living on the dark side of the moon you’ve probably Dugg plenty of stories.

But what a lot of people aren’t aware of is something called Digg Labs!

digg-labs

So what exactly is Digg Labs?

The labs provide a broader (and deeper) view of Digg. A lot of stuff gets submitted to Digg every day, so good things can sometimes fly right past you. Labs projects look beneath the surface of the Digg community’s activities.

Stack

Digg Stack shows diggs occurring in real time on up to 100 stories at once. Diggers fall from above and stack up on popular stories. Brightly colored stories have more Diggs.

stack

Swarm

Digg Swarm draws a circle for stories as they’re dugg. Diggers swarm around stories, and make them grow. Brightly colored stories have more Diggs. This is my personal favourite!

digg-swarm

BigSpy

Digg BigSpy places stories at the top of the screen as they are dugg. As new stories are dugg, older stories move down the list. Bigger stories have more Diggs.

digg-big-spy

Arc

Digg Arc displays stories, topics, and containers wrapped around a sphere. Arcs trail people as they Digg stories across topics. Stories with more Diggs make thicker arcs.

digg-arc

Pics

Digg Pics is a relative newcomer to Digg Labs. It tracks the activity of images on the site. Images slide in from the left as people Digg and submit them. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me!

You can also download all of the above as screensavers and run them on your PC or Mac!

How Much Is Mozilla & Firefox Actually Worth?

firefox-title

How much is Firefox worth, will it go public and when? The answers are a lot, almost definitely and probably this year or next.

Mozilla’s open source browser, Firefox has done what most people would have considered impossible in the past few years. It has managed to eat away at Microsoft’s domination of the browser market. When you think of the major advantages Microsoft has had in that it’s browser comes pre-installed on just about every new PC, this is even more of an achievement.

Firefox currently has more than a 15% share of the browser market. That equals approximately 100 million or more downloads. So just how much is Firefox worth?

According to the New York Times in May 2007, Firefox has generated more than $100 million in revenue over the past few years. It generated $6 million in 2004 and $52 million in 2005. If revenue continues to grow we could be looking at $100 million to $200 million per year. And that’s before it has really started trying to build a business.

Mozilla hasn’t made much effort yet to actually build a business. Their main revenue stream is derived from per browser carriage revenue for the little Google search box you see in the top right corner of your toolbar. This is equates to approximately $1 a download according to some estimates, so there is clearly a lot more money to be made.

Even if you allow $50 million a year for costs that still would leave Mozilla with annual profit of $50 million to $150 million.

So when will Mozilla/Firefox go public? Mozilla’s Mitchell Baker says “never!”. But why would the Mozilla Foundation not want several billion dollars worth of public company stock?

Let’s face it… an IPO is inevitable.

And here’s a thought… what if Mozilla bought Netscape from Time Warner and renamed the company Netscape Firefox! ;)
