Facebook Ads May Violate New York Law…

The New York Times has reported that Facebook’s latest plan may violate New York privacy law.

Facebook plans to associate advertisements with the names and pictures of users who like those particular products.

The New York law states that a lawsuit for damages may be brought by any person whose name, portrait, picture or voice is used for advertising purposes without written consent. Such actions could be a criminal misdemeanor.

But the law could also be applied by users outside of the state of New York if their information was associated with an ad that was shown anywhere in the state of New York.

Facebook have been quick to comment that the new social ads platform will let the users link to a product themselves and thus provide consent.

Another advertising system was recently introduced by Facebook which allows marketers target specific interest groups.
