“What is Twitter” I hear you ask? Well for those of you who have been living under a rock since it’s launch in July 2006, Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (called Tweets).
Tweets are text-based posts up to 140 characters long. They can be made via SMS, instant messenger, e-mail, through the Twitter website, via the address bar in Firefox with the TwitterBar plugin or via an application such as Twitterrific (which at the present time is Mac only).
Twitter was founded in March 2006 by San Francisco start-up company Obvious Corp.
Updates are displayed on the user’s profile page and also instantly delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone is the default).
You can even follow me on Twitter but only if you’re very very very bored…
Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messenger, SMS, RSS, e-mail or through an application.
Due to Twitter’s success, a large number of sites imitating its concept have sprung up around the world, such as Powce.
